A few years ago, I came across an interesting article about two new drugs that are used to treat the signs and symptoms of heartburn, such as Nexium and Prevacid. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to prescribe these drugs to people who already have heartburn issues, but I think the two drugs would have helped some people too.
We know that heartburn, a condition that causes frequent heartburn, is a serious and often uncomfortable symptom of heartburn. In fact, it can have many causes, including:
However, I do think there is another reason that heartburn is more prevalent than previously believed. That's because the acid in the stomach can cause heartburn to occur more often and, in some cases, to lead to a more severe form of heartburn. In fact, in 2013, the World Health Organization published a survey that found that people had two times as many heartburn symptoms as they would have a symptom of. These symptoms include:
In other words, if you have heartburn and are worried about it, there are two ways you can help. The first way is to get help from a doctor or your pharmacist.
The second way is to use a medication called Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) and get it prescribed by your doctor. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor, so it is used to treat heartburn that is triggered by frequent heartburn, or by the symptoms of heartburn, such as pain and discomfort.
Nexium is used to treat reflux disease, ulcers, and acid reflux. It works by decreasing the amount of stomach acid that is absorbed. You can take Nexium with or without food, but it can be taken with or without food. You should take the medicine at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a large meal, as some of these foods can delay the time you need to feel full. If you miss a meal, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next meal, skip the missed meal and take the medicine as soon as you remember. Do not take 2 doses of Nexium at the same time.
If you are not sure how to take Nexium, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Nexium should only be taken as directed by your doctor. They can tell you how to take the medication and what dosage is appropriate for your needs.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor and in the dose and frequency that your doctor prescribes. Do not take Nexium more frequently than once daily. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
If you take Nexium at the same time each day, the medication may not work as well.
If you take more Nexium than your doctor prescribes, it may cause more side effects, such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation. If you take more Nexium than your doctor prescribes, you may not experience any side effects. If you take Nexium too much, your doctor may not recommend it. If you have heartburn that is not treated by a doctor, you may need to see a doctor for an at-home remedy, such as a small cup of water. Do not take Nexium if you have heartburn that is not treated by a doctor. A doctor may also advise you to go to a medical facility that treats heartburn, such as a hospital or a nursing home. You should never take Nexium for any condition that is not properly treated by a doctor.
Some of the side effects of Nexium include:

Nexium® (esomeprazole) treats frequent heartburn in adults, including children ages 12 and over. It's a brand-name medication used to treat frequent heartburn and other conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and peptic ulcers. It is available over the counter and is typically taken once or twice a day.
Nexium® (esomeprazole) may be prescribed for short-term relief of frequent heartburn. Nexium® (esomeprazole) is an acid-suppressing medication used to treat GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions caused by stomach acid. Nexium is often the first line of treatment for adults experiencing frequent heartburn. Nexium may also be used to treat conditions such as frequent heartburn, ulcers, and other stomach problems. Nexium can be taken with food to help reduce stomach acid. Nexium should be used at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after eating to prevent stomach irritation.
If you are taking Nexium for long-term relief of frequent heartburn, it may take longer to feel the full benefit of the medication. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, contact your doctor to discuss a different treatment option. In some instances, you may receive a prescription medication for long-term Nexium relief, such as Zoloft® (sertraline) or Prozac® (fluoxetine), for a short-term relief of heartburn. Always tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions or are taking other medications that may interact with Nexium. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before you take Nexium.
