AstraZeneca has announced that it has reduced its full-year profit and diluted earnings guidance from its $2.35 billion patent filing to $1.7 billion from $1.45 billion, which is a reduction of more than 8% since 2014. AstraZeneca’s guidance is subject to change after this quarter, but the company remains committed to making a full year of revenue growth.
The company announced that it has lowered its full-year profit and diluted earnings guidance from $1.45 billion to $1.35 billion from $1.45 billion.
The company said that the reduced guidance was driven by a “partially successful” first quarter performance in the second quarter, which helped make AstraZeneca’s earnings rise to $1.05 billion. The company reported full-year net income for 2016, including full-year cash earnings of $2.05 billion, as well as adjusted gross income, including net loss on non-GAAP EPS.
In addition, the company said that it expected the first quarter to be “a positive year for AstraZeneca,” with a “high level of confidence in the continued strong performance of our portfolio, and we are confident of our strong performance in 2017.”
Under the guidance, the company’s operating profit will be increased by 3% in 2017, as compared to 2016. The reduction in operating profit is expected to take place during the second quarter of 2017, when full-year earnings guidance is expected to be available for sale.
“We are pleased with the first quarter of 2016 and look forward to the second quarter of 2017,” AstraZeneca said. “While we will continue to make significant changes to our financial strategies, we remain committed to achieving the full year of revenue growth and delivering earnings guidance to patients in 2017.”
AstraZeneca’s $2.35 billion patent filing to reflect a reduction in the total patent value of its product, Nexium, in 2014, will be held by AstraZeneca on September 22, 2017.
The company has completed a second quarter of full-year revenue growth, offset by its $1.45 billion diluted earnings guidance, which was initially reported in August 2016. The company also added a new incentive for eligible patients to receive a $5 coupon for Nexium that will increase its price range by 5% from $5.50 to $5.75.
In addition to the $2.35 billion patent filing, AstraZeneca’s $1.45 billion diluted earnings guidance will be revised to include a 5% increase in net income for 2016, as well as an increase in adjusted gross income.
AstraZeneca said that the company is planning to offer earnings guidance for 2016 to be available to patients during the first half of 2017. The company also announced that it will apply for a new incentive for eligible patients to receive an additional $5 coupon for Nexium that will increase its price range by 5% from $5.50 to $5.75.
“While we will continue to make significant changes to our financial strategies, we remain confident of our strong performance in 2017.”
“We continue to invest heavily in our pipeline of new and existing pharmaceutical products,” said Paul M. Williams, president, AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer. “In addition to our core research and development businesses, we continue to invest in our pipeline of new and existing medicines that we will continue to support.”
